Your work is making change in people’s lives and the world. Often this requires that you navigate complex systems and work on ambiguous challenges with limited resources. We will introduce and guide social sector practitioners through the process of integrating practices of human-centered design, systems thinking, equity, and strategy in order to have greater impact. Join us for this e-certification program with other leaders and practitioners.
About the Workshop
This workshop introduces design practices that have been developed for the unique needs of those leading or making change in the social sector. The workshop blends the following four essential practices that will help you navigate your work:
Human-Centered Design centers people’s experiences, behaviors, beliefs, and needs as your guide.
Systems Thinking explores the relationships and forces that affect the challenge.
Strategy hones your goals and develops the path to reach them.
Equity engages an intention around power, bias, and identity.
We have combined these practices and worked to make them complementary and accessible. We call it Integrative Design because we believe the integration of these practices makes for more effective design work.
This course has been built on a decade of teaching hundreds of social sector leaders across the world through the d.school’s Designing for Social Systems program.

Who is this workshop for?
Practitioners and leaders in the social sector (i.e. nonprofit organizations, government agencies, or foundations), or mission-driven companies, seeking to learn how to advance their work using human centered design, systems, strategy and equity practices. Also a good fit for practitioners looking to integrate these methods into their organization’s overall culture and practices.
Participants will benefit from having some previous exposure to human-centered design. For those who do not have any previous experience, we will be offering a free introduction to Human Centered Design online session that participants can attend before the workshop begin.
I have a colleague who would love to attend. Is there still time for them to register?
Yes! They can register up until September 11, 2024
Can I join the call on my phone?
It’s ideal to join from your computer and not a phone or tablet, so you can see and read the details we show on screen.
What do I need to prepare?
Complete the prework that you will receive after you register for the program. You will be asked to identify a project or program to which you want to apply the workshop's content.
Before we begin, bring something to write with and paper/notebook. Print out the worksheets we will provide. (If you forget them you can still work on paper using the frameworks we will display.)
Will my video need to be on? How much outfit planning do I need to do?
During the main sessions (Fridays) video will not be visible to others and your audio will be muted. We’re sure you’d look great! That said, you can relax (even in the comfort of your pajamas) and focus 100% of your attention on the activities. There will not be any breakout rooms.
During the Studio Hours (Tuesdays), we invite you to video-on so we can be in conversation.
Something came up and I no longer will be able to attend live – will I still have access to the recording and resources?
Yes, as long as you are registered, the recording will be shared with you. You'll also get full access to all of the workshop resources and will still be eligible to receive a statement of participation.
