Our approach
Drawing from the fields of design and engineering, we empower our students to tackle complex challenges and build products, services, and experiences with transformative potential—in service of both people and planet. Our Bachelor’s degree program, Master’s degree program, and university-wide elective classes are based on a human-centered approach to design.

Our hands-on classes are rooted in the real world because the best learning happens by doing.
We emphasize the care of human and non-human stakeholders in our work because our work has the potential to influence many generations to come.
Our educational expertise draws from the best of Stanford to create collaborative classes in service of our efforts to expand our abilities to make and do across fields.
What is design?
Today’s design work is broader than products, experiences, and systems. It also includes the technologies and data that power the above, and the implications and consequences of all of our work in the world in the short and long term. This interconnected landscape is today’s design work. You might focus your efforts on one of these layers, but it’s critical to understand how they affect one another. We believe we have the responsibility to design and teach the full problem space.
We aim to build a world that works for more people, made by more people, driven by human imagination, innovation, and ingenuity. Our work and teaching are guided by four basic values.
