What will I learn?

Overview

Designing for Extended Realities is a course that equips students with the skills and knowledge to design extended reality (XR) in a critical, intentional, and human-centered way. Students will explore and experiment with state-of-the-art XR technologies like virtual reality, augmented reality, mixed reality, and the metaverse. Through the practices of design thinking, rapid prototyping, and critical discussions, students will gain an understanding of how to leverage XR technology to create real value for people and society.

This is a workshop and activity-centric course, with supplementary readings, discussions, and lectures across domains such as healthcare, education, entertainment, and more. Throughout the course students will become familiar with the technology and tools need to quickly prototype and build proof-of-concepts for XR products. The final project will challenge student groups to design and critique a new extended reality product experience that addresses real-world problems, alongside pitching to a panel of guest experts.

Throughout the course, students will interact with industry experts and thought leaders through guest lectures and project mentorship. These advisors will assist students in framing problems, developing ideas, prototyping, and crafting compelling product stories for their final projects. The Spring 2024 advisor panel will include XR experts, designers, and product leaders from Unity Technologies, Meta Reality Labs , IDEO, and more.

By the end of the course, students will have the skills and knowledge necessary to become responsible and innovative creators, practitioners, or entrepreneurs in the ever-evolving world of extended reality. Partnership with industry will help students to ground their work in practical industry applications and make their transition into the professional world easier.

Prior technical abilities not required, though strong foundation in design and product encouraged. We aim to admit a mix of technical and non-technical students from all backgrounds. Moreover, purchasing an XR device is not necessary as Meta devices will be available for students during the course.
