This two-and-a-half-hour virtual workshop is designed for social sector practitioners who want to build their knowledge and skills around AI for social impact, and leave with tools they can immediately put to use.
The Stanford d.school has developed a framework that integrates a human-centered AI approach with human-centered design principles. In this session, we'll introduce the framework, try it on together, and explore real examples of how you can apply it to one of your organization's AI challenges.
This year marks the third year that the d.school is partnering with Stanford’s Institute for Human-Centered AI on the in-person Designing for Human-Centered AI for Social Impact workshop held this year in October 7-9, 2026. This virtual workshop features selected new content and tools developed for that flagship program, including approaches that are newly created and not yet widely available in the field. We are offering it online to make the learning more accessible and affordable for a broader community of practitioners. For those seeking the full depth of the integrated experience, we encourage you to apply for the in-person workshop.
Who is this workshop for?
Practitioners and leaders in the social sector (i.e. nonprofit organizations, government agencies, or foundations), or mission-driven companies, seeking to learn how to build AI-driven interventions for social impact.
Can I join the call on my phone?
It’s ideal to join from your computer and not a phone or tablet, so you can see and read the details we show on screen.
What do I need to prepare?
After you register, you will receive some pre-work which invites you to identify a project or program to which you want to apply the workshop's content.
Before we begin, bring something to write with and paper/notebook. Print out the worksheets we will provide. (If you forget them you can still work on paper using the frameworks we will display.)
I have a colleague who would love to attend. Is there still time for them to register?
Yes! They can register up until the day before the workshop date.
Something came up and I no longer will be able to attend live – will I still have access to the recording and resources?
Yes, as long as you are registered, the recording will be shared with you. You'll also get full access to all of the workshop resources and will still be eligible to receive a Certificate of Participation.
