What will I learn?

Overview

The world is currently facing a deep crisis in learning that has far-reaching consequences for individuals, societies, and economies. This crisis is characterized by a multitude of challenges that hinder equitable access to quality education and impede effective learning outcomes. One of the issues is the digital divide, where a significant portion of the global population lacks access to reliable internet connectivity and technology, leaving them at a disadvantage in acquiring knowledge and skills. Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the crisis, as widespread school closures have disrupted the education system and widened existing disparities. Additionally, factors, such as poverty and inequality, the escalating impact of climate change events, the rising number of global refugees, and the concerning rise in mental health issues make it difficult for learners to engage effectively in the educational process. These intersecting crises require novel interdisciplinary approaches. On the positive side, the revolution in brain science, learning sciences, data and technology, including generative AI, creates opportunities for new solutions in learning.

This course aims to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to develop innovative solutions that address the challenges faced by learners in under-resourced communities. By embracing a project-based approach and fostering partnerships with local and global communities, our students will have the opportunity to explore and experiment with design techniques and tools, ultimately co-creating solutions that are contextually relevant and responsive. The course provides a comprehensive exploration of human-centered design, learning sciences, digital technologies, and education entrepreneurship, offering access to leaders from Stanford K12 Lab and Stanford Learning Accelerator. Its ultimate goal is to foster effective and sustainable solutions that significantly improve the lives of learners in under-resourced communities. By the course's conclusion, students will be equipped with the necessary skills to drive meaningful change for learners in any community. Given the urgent need to address the challenges exacerbated by the pandemic, this course stands as a critical step towards creating a more just and equitable world for all.
