About the Fund

The Prototyping Turbocharge Fund supports undergraduate and graduate students in pursuing prototyping-intensive design work by providing funding for project-related expenses, regardless of their financial means. The fund is intended to enable deeper exploration, iteration, and experimentation through physical making.

Funds may be used to support:

  • Design coursework–related projects with a significant physical prototyping component
  • Independent design projects that demonstrate clear goals, a defined scope, and a commitment to physical prototyping

Awards are application-based and reviewed by an internal committee. Outcomes reached by committee review are considered final.

Eligibility

Stanford undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in Design classes or declared in the Design major may apply. Priority will be given to students who have declared a major in Design.  Graduating students are not eligible to receive funding after degree conferral.

Award and Commitment

Awards range from $250-$2,500 and are intended to cover materials, tools, and other prototyping-related expenses. Funds are accessed through the request and appropriate use of the department purchasing card (PCard).

In addition to their project duties, all award recipients are expected to:

  • Attend an orientation at the start of your project
  • Track and manage project budget and expenses
  • Submit a brief mid-project progress report
  • Submit a final report documenting outcomes and learning
  • Present your work at the d.school Prototyping Awards Expo

Not meeting award and commitment expectations may result in a restriction or loss of funds.
