What will I learn?

Overview

How might we design schools that delight children, inspire learning, and nurture community?

Violence of all kinds has created a world of fear and trauma. This course is for students who wish to revolutionize the way we understand and provide for safe learning environments. We will reimagine school safety and through design thinking methodologies, create strategies which will be brought to life by course end. Although a serious topic, creation is fun and delight is ever present.

In the process of tackling this real world problem, you will learn essential tools which will be useful in ANY domain. They will be portable and expandable. These abilities include: learning to learn from others, experiment rapidly, communicate deliberately, and build and craft intentionally. All combine to help you successfully navigate the inevitable ambiguity found in all courses of study and the world around us.

We envision a world of well-being where children are nurtured, free to learn and prosper. Our work together will be aimed at bringing that vision to life. Now.

As an essential part of this course, students will be asked to attend two field trips to ASCEND Charter School in Oakland at the beginning and the end of the course. These will occur on the class days, January 8 and March 9. Transportation will be provided and depart at 10:30 AM. Please include in your application whether this is possible for you.
