How to navigate ethics and equity when designing strategies to scale innovations

Education innovators often believe they have the “next big idea” that will go viral, and spread throughout the entire education system. But often, their innovative idea fails to catch on, or leads to unintended consequences. This short d.school Pop-Out will provide a chance for you to pressure test your innovation, and to think through ways to increase the likelihood that it achieves the impact at scale you might desire. In just 1.5 days, you’ll have the chance to think through if your innovation could be scaled, and more importantly if it should be scaled, once you take into account often unanticipated ethical and equity factors. As part of the Pop-Out, you’ll get access to a brand new scaling toolkit, and get a chance to apply the materials as part of a fun, hands-on, immersive challenge where you’ll face real-world opportunities and obstacles. At the end of the class, you’ll have a chance to reflect on how you’ll improve the design of your strategy to scale up your innovation, and perhaps a plan to know when you should scale down!
