The d.school, in partnership with the Stanford Graduate School of Education and StreetCode Academy, is proud to announce a transformative initiative funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. This pioneering project, EdTech Remix, will launch a vibrant community of practice dedicated to advancing equitable K-12 edtech design practices and products.

The edtech industry is growing rapidly, but too often exacerbates rather than closes equity gaps. EdTech Remix seeks to bridge the gap between innovation and equity by bringing together edtech designers, company leaders, students, educators, procurement professionals, network leaders, researchers, and other stakeholders into an intentional community.

"Our mission is to empower edtech designers with the tools, insights, and community they need to create more equitable K-12 edtech products," said d.school project lead Isabel Huff. “Some companies already have robust design processes that address issues of equity, while others are in earlier stages. All of them can benefit from this work because equity encompasses so many things – accessibility for students with disabilities, products that function without high-bandwidth wifi, pedagogies that value students’ unique contexts and cultures, and more. We hope the Edtech Remix community will be a forum where designers can bring the problems of practice they’re facing and collaborate to surface and generate sustainable strategies for equity.”

"By elevating the power of community, bringing in the voices of students and educators, and by sourcing the best thought leaders and practitioners of equitable design, we are poised to drastically increase the positive outcomes of education technology,” said Olatunde Sobomehin, CEO of StreetCode Academy, the community non-profit partner of the project. “It’s about supporting designers, but it’s also about igniting new partnerships and initiatives among the other stakeholders.”

"We believe in the power of partnerships to drive meaningful change," said Dr. Bryan Brown, Education Professor at Stanford University and Lead Researcher of the project. "EdTech Remix brings together the GSE’s world-class research, the d.school’s renowned innovation, and StreetCode’s deep understanding of what it means to work and build in community. It’s an ideal leadership team equipped to both run and study the impact of this innovative community of practice."

The community will convene virtually once a month for workshops, discussions, and coaching. Twice-a-year in-person gatherings will be open to select participants. All EdTech Remix activities and events are free of charge.

EdTech Remix welcomes participation from a wide range of stakeholders. If you are an edtech stakeholder and want to bring your energy to this creative community, fill out the form below.
