At Stanford’s d.school, Stuart combines his background as an entrepreneur and business angel with design thinking and business modeling tools and insight.
He leads the Business Modeling track of Design for Extreme Affordability, helping student entrepreneurs develop innovative and sustainable real world projects with scalable social impact. He is a co-founder, along with Erica Estrada-Liou, of the Social Entrepreneurship Lab, where Extreme teams and other campus-based entrepreneurs can continue their project development, often as a preamble to creating successful startup social ventures. In addition he is involved in a number of other social impact related initiatives at Stanford.
Stuart spent 20+ years in the travel reservations technology industry, culminating with the founding of Gradient Solutions, an early pioneer in connecting travel e-commerce websites to legacy reservations systems. In August 2000, Gradient was acquired by Sabre.
Stuart’s current interests include financially sustainable high impact social enterprises, business strategy through design thinking, virtuous spiral entrepreneurial ecosystems, leveraging old industries with new technology and any “why did I not think of that” innovation that addresses a real user need. He supports, advises and invests in for-profit and for-benefit enterprises in sectors ranging from Web CRM to medical devices.
Stuart owns and operates Papera Ranch, an old-vine Zinfandel vineyard in California’s Russian River Valley, from which a number of critically acclaimed wines are produced, all of which he is required to quality check on a regular basis.
