Reading Reflection (from when I was in traffic!)

EDUC 338X Reading Reflection Sheet – Darri

Video Games, Mind, and Learning by James Paul Gee

Possible sentence starters to fill in the below:

    Design Process

insights, challenges, relating to the design process

*video games- "action-and-goal-directed preparations for, and simulations of, embodied experiences for learning"

*"affordances" have to be matched with a user who has the wherewithal to utilize them... We need to be cognizant of our young users' cognitive abilities

*think about the relationship between the world and the actors

    Teachers/Training

thoughts, new information, aha's related to teachers or teaching

*new research on the brain indicates that it works like a computer- recording experiences and creating intricate patterns and relationships between them.

*search for affordances that can lessen the cognitive burden via smart tools- think of ways the virtual and real characters can share the thinking components of a task.

*what smart tools can be implemented?

    Opportunities

how might we's, ideas, possible innovations in education

*HMW take advantage of a shared virtual/real character experience?

*HMW create a simulated experience to prepare, to teach, and to test a user's abilities?

*HMW make this a joint experience for user and parent? Can the parent engage in the gaming or will they be satisfied with some sort of user feedback information?

    New Questions

things I need to know, research more, want to challenge

    * We need to look into creating modifiable worlds; allowing the user to "set" their world - how much is enough for young users?

*what types of affordances are effective with four-year-olds?

*is "cross-functional affiliation" important to young users?

I was surprised by... I was energized by... I was uncomfortable with... I found it easy to... I would never have thought of... One thingthat really resonates with me...

We, as educators, need to think more like game designers when considering engagement. Game designers in turn, need to think more like curriculum designers when creating user experiences. The two efforts should and can be synonymous!
