Empathy Box

Activity Description: In this activity, students examine the contents of a box containing a variety of clues. They are asked to generate information about the owner of the box by creating stories, making connections, and trying to understand the owner through his or her collection of objects and artifacts.

Time: One 40-50 minute class period is needed to complete this set of activities. 

Divide the class into groups of 4-6 students. Prepare a set of boxes with an   

    assortment of objects, mementos, photographs, artifacts and memorabilia for each 

    group. Examples of what might be in the box include dried flowers, ribbons,

    medals, rings, programs, photographs, trophies, etc. You may choose any assortment 

    of items that seem appropriate in reflecting things that a person would care enough 

    about to collect. You can use a jewelry box, a plastic box, a shoe box, or any

    kind of box that might house a treasured collection. 

Tell the class that they are going to try to understand the owner of a treasured 

    memory box by examining the contents of the box. 

Encourage the students to closely examine the contents, and think about why the 

    owner may have chosen to save the different objects. 

Ask each group to create a brief sketch and presentation describing what the students have been able to surmise about the box owners.
